Prof. Oliver Opitz

Prof. Dr. med. Oliver G. Opitz, AGAF, brings in many years of experience in translational and digital medicine up to implementing health innovations into the healthcare system. After receiving his doctoral degree (summa cum laude), he trained in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology at the University Medical Center of the University of Freiburg.

From 1997 – 2000 he completed fellowships at Harvard Medical School, Boston and at the Abramson Cancer Center at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia. Professor Opitz received his Venia Legendi at the Albert-Ludwigs-University of Freiburg and was recruited in 2006 as director of the newly founded Comprehensive Cancer Center Freiburg (CCCF), one of the first Comprehensive Cancer Centers in Germany, designated by the German Cancer Aid.

Since 2014, he had been developing the Heinrich Lanz Center for Digital Health at the Medical Faculty Mannheim of Heidelberg University into an innovative center for translational and digital medicine. In 2018, he took over as head of the Coordinating Unit Telemedicine Baden-Württemberg (KTBW), developing the KTBW into an agile innovation and implementation hub, with the aim of translating and implementing digital and AI innovations into the health care system, while making innovations accessible to the public. His research interests lay in integrating translational and digital medicine, exploring the potential of AI in health care, developing framework conditions for an innovative data-driven health care system and using digital competency building as driver for digital transformation. In 2023, he transferred the KTBW to the Bosch Health Campus as KTBW I Bosch Digital Innovation Hub (BDIH) to fulfill its potential in an equally academic, primary care and innovation driven environment.

He is involved in the Clinnova initiative from its inception being part of the core group that brought up the Clinnova idea, developed the concept, successfully initiated funding and is still coordinating the international effort.
