Prof. Jan Niess

Jan Niess is a Professor of Gastroenterology at the University of Basel and a Senior Consultant at the University Digestive Health Care Center, Clarunis, Basel, Switzerland. His research focuses on inflammatory bowel disease and eosinophilic esophagitis using patient-derived and preclinical disease models and clinical trials. He studied medicine at the Friedrich Schiller University, Jena, Germany, received postdoctoral training at the Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School, Boston, USA, and was trained in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology at the University Hospital Ulm, Ulm, Germany. Afterward, he moved to Switzerland as an Attending Physician at the Inselspital Bern. The University of Basel promoted Jan Niess after a successful evaluation of his tenure track assistant professorship to a full professor in 2021.

Jan is a member of the Swiss Gastroenterology Society, the German Gastroenterology Society, the Society of Mucosa Immunology, and the American Association of Immunologists. He has published > 100 peer-reviewed publications related to inflammatory bowel disease and eosinophilic esophagitis, covering molecular aspects of both inflammatory diseases. He has been awarded multiple awards, including the DACED Future Award, the UEG Top Abstract Prize, and the SGG Gastroenterology Prize.

The Swiss National Science Foundation continuously supports Jan’s research program, enabling him to pursue cutting-edge research at the interface between clinical gastroenterology and mucosal immunology to better understand inflammatory bowel disease.
